The Hollywood Year
Hollywood's calendar is set by its venues, and the venues run on seasons rather than on dates. Knowing which of them is lit tells you most of what you need to know about these streets on any given evening.
The Hollywood Bowl season runs from late June to the end of September, and on a Bowl night Highland Avenue and the Cahuenga Pass fill from the late afternoon on. Across roughly the same stretch of the year, Hollywood Forever screens films on the lawn on Saturday evenings, from late May through to Halloween, and holds its Dรญa de los Muertos in late October.
Opening nights at the Hollywood Pantages come round about once a month from early autumn, which is the recurring occasion for a stage-door bouquet on this side of town. Awards season overlaps them: nominations land in January and the season peaks in early March at the Dolby Theatre inside Ovation Hollywood, when the boulevard around it is closed off for days at a time.
Two more closures repeat every year. Songkran takes Hollywood Boulevard through Thai Town each April, and the Christmas Parade takes it on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. If the address you are sending to sits on the boulevard, those are days to mention when you order. Walk of Fame star ceremonies happen about twice a month, are free to the public, and are finished before lunch.
Underneath all of that runs a plainer weekly rhythm. The studio lots and the production offices are weekday addresses. The canyon houses above Franklin Avenue are weekend ones. The two hospitals in East Hollywood are neither, and take flowers every week of the year.
Which Flowers Are in Season in California
California grows a great deal of what goes into a bouquet, and it does not grow everything. The honest version of that is more useful to you than the catalogue version.
Ranunculus is a California crop from February to May, at its best in March and April, and stock overlaps it from January into May. Pincushion protea comes off the same coastal fields from February to April. Sunflowers run long, March to October. Dahlias take over from June to October and are strongest in August and September. Field-grown garden roses, the scented ones, start around the middle of April and hold until November; roses outside that window came out of a greenhouse or off a plane. Leucadendron Safari Sunset, the red-bracted stem that makes an autumn arrangement look like autumn, is a September to November crop. The greens are the year-round part: eucalyptus, myrtle, rosemary, salal and olive are cut in California in every month, and so is snapdragon.
Peonies are not a California flower. There is no California peony grower. Every peony that reaches this city has been flown in, which is why they can be had in any month and why their quality moves with the season instead of staying flat. We will build with them whenever you want them; we would just rather you knew that a peony in November has travelled and a ranunculus in March has not. Freesia, hydrangea, tulips, lisianthus, anemone and carnations are the same story told more quietly: available year-round because they are imported year-round, not because California has a season for them.
