Which anniversary is this one?

An anniversary is not Valentine's Day with a different date on it. Valentine's is a public deadline everybody meets at the same hour. An anniversary is private, and the only person grading it already knows what you sent last year. That changes what is worth buying.

The first few

Early anniversaries carry the most weight per dollar, because the pattern is still being set. Specific beats large. If there were ranunculus at the wedding, send ranunculus. If nobody can remember what was at the wedding, a single-variety bouquet in one clear colour is the choice that reads as chosen rather than ordered.

Five to fifteen

This is the stretch where flowers quietly turn into a habit, and a habit is worth more than a surprise. What helps here is scale rather than novelty: the same idea, one size up, so the difference is felt without being explained. Most of that sits in $110 to $190.

Twenty and past it

By now the flowers are for the room as much as for the person. An arrangement that holds a dining table for a week and gets remarked on by everyone who visits does more than a hand-tied bunch that ends up in the kitchen. Look at flowers in a vase and at the largest arrangements.

The one you forgot

It happens, and it is recoverable. Our same-day cutoff is 3:00 PM Pacific, express runs two to three hours, and if it is already evening the ready now selection can be there in about an hour. Do not let the apology become the whole message. Write the card as though you had remembered.

A word about red roses

They are the right answer more often than florists like to admit, and the objection to them is aesthetic snobbery rather than craft. What we would change is count and tension: fewer stems of a better grade, bound close, beats a wide bunch of thin ones every time. If you want to step sideways without losing the meaning, garden roses from late spring, or peonies while the northern crop is running, do the same job in a different accent.
