The Glendale Year
Glendale's flower calendar opens earlier than most of the country's. The Armenian Apostolic Church keeps Christmas on 6 January, as the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany, and Armenian churches across the city hold the Christmas Divine Liturgy that morning, St. Mary's on South Central Avenue among them. Armenian Mother's Day falls on 7 April, the Feast of the Annunciation, and it is a flower day in the plainest sense: flowers go to mothers and grandmothers. Glendale Unified closes each 24 April for Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, and the city's commemoration is held at the Alex.
Late spring and early summer belong to the campuses. Glendale Community College on North Verdugo Road holds commencement each June on Sartoris Field, and the fall term opens again at the end of August.
The performing calendar splits in two. The Alex Theatre on North Brand runs screenings and concerts through the year, so an opening night there can fall in any month. Brand Library and Art Center keeps its galleries going year-round and moves its concert series outdoors on Friday evenings, from July into late August, on the lawn behind the building.
Forest Lawn on South Glendale Avenue holds its Memorial Day ceremony each year on the last Monday in May, and it is the one date on the memorial-park calendar that is public rather than personal. The rest of the year, sympathy flowers follow private anniversaries rather than any public date.
Retail Glendale turns over in early November, when the Americana's tree arrives and the lighting follows a couple of weeks later; the Americana and the Galleria stay busy from there into the last week of December. What Is in Season, and What Is Imported
A florist can get almost anything in any month if someone is willing to fly it in. The more useful question is what California is cutting the week you order, because those stems arrive with the most life left in them. Honest seasonality is an argument for quality, not an apology for a short list.
The Glendale winter and early spring are the strongest stretch of the California year. Stock is in season from January through May and at its best from February to April. Ranunculus runs February to May and peaks in March and April, which puts it squarely on Armenian Mother's Day. Pincushion protea is a February to April flower, and wax flower carries from December through May.
From the middle of April to November there are field-grown garden roses, a seasonal California crop and a different thing from the greenhouse roses sold every week of the year. Sunflowers run March to October. Dahlias run June to October, with the best of them in August and September, and Leucadendron Safari Sunset comes in from September to November. A few things keep no season here at all: snapdragon is cut year-round, and so are the California greens, eucalyptus, myrtle, rosemary, salal and olive, in all twelve months.
Two things we will not pretend about. Peonies are not a California crop. No California peony grower exists, so every peony in Los Angeles is imported, all year, and its quality moves with the source rather than with the month. Freesia, hydrangea, tulips, lisianthus, anemone and carnations are here year-round on imports too, and we will not print a California season for them, because they do not have one. What is genuinely in season shows up in our bouquets.
