The studio sits on North El Molino Avenue just north of East Walnut Street, about a third of a mile north of Colorado Boulevard and a little under a mile east of Old Pasadena. The Pasadena Playhouse is four tenths of a mile south of us on the same street. Working from inside the city makes a Pasadena address a short run: even the far corners, out past Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, are about five miles away.
We are open every day from six in the morning until eight at night, which is useful if you are ordering before work. If you would rather collect an order from the studio than have it delivered, call us and we will arrange it.
Neighborhoods We Serve in Pasadena
Pasadena runs about 23 square miles, from the Arroyo Seco on the west to the Sierra Madre line on the east. We deliver to all of it.
- The Playhouse District. Our own neighborhood, bounded by the 210, California Boulevard, Los Robles Avenue and Hudson Avenue. Apartment buildings, offices, the Pasadena Playhouse at 39 S El Molino Ave, and the restaurants around Colorado.

- South Arroyo, San Rafael and Linda Vista. The west side, on and above the Arroyo Seco. Hillside streets, long driveways and houses set well back from the road. If there is a gate code, tell us when you order.
- Hastings Ranch. East Pasadena, north of the 210 and east of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, about five miles out. A postwar tract of wide lots, and the furthest address we reach inside the city.

- Huntington Hospital (Huntington Health, a Cedars-Sinai affiliate), 100 W California Blvd, about two miles from the studio. We deliver to the hospital; give us the patient's full name and, if you know it, the room number and unit.
- Las Encinas Hospital (2900 E Del Mar Blvd, about three and a half miles) and Shriners Children's Southern California (909 S Fair Oaks Ave, about two miles). We deliver to both, and to medical offices across the city.
- Caltech (1200 E California Blvd) and Pasadena City College (1570 E Colorado Blvd), each under two miles away, and ArtCenter College of Design at both its campuses: Hillside at 1700 Lida St above the Rose Bowl, about five miles, and South Campus on South Raymond Avenue, about two miles. Pasadena's Year
Pasadena keeps a calendar you could set a watch by. It is worth knowing, because it tells you when the city is celebrating something and when it is simply at work.
- Around New Year, the west side belongs to the Tournament of Roses. Floats are finished in the days after Christmas, every surface of them covered in natural material, and the parade sets off from Green Street and Orange Grove and turns onto Colorado Boulevard on New Year's Day — or the day after, when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday. The Rose Bowl game is played in the same stretch of days. For that whole week the Arroyo side of the city is a different place to drive.
- Each June the campuses graduate. Caltech on East California Boulevard and Pasadena City College on East Colorado Boulevard both hold commencement in June. ArtCenter works differently: it graduates twice a year, at the end of its spring and fall terms, and holds the ceremony at the Pasadena Convention Center on East Green Street. Caltech's own year is three ten-week terms opening in late September, so that campus fills and empties three times between autumn and early summer.
- From early autumn the theatres open. The Pasadena Playhouse season opens in September and runs production by production into the following summer, four tenths of a mile down our own street. At the Ambassador Auditorium on South St John Avenue, the Pasadena Symphony's classical season runs from autumn to late spring, and each programme is played twice on the same day, a matinee and an evening. Opening and closing nights are flower occasions in both buildings.
- The second Sunday of every month, the Rose Bowl. The flea market takes the stadium and its lots from early morning, and San Rafael, Linda Vista and the Arroyo streets carry the traffic for it.
- Huntington Hospital has no season. Two miles from the studio on West California Boulevard, it runs the same in February as in August, which is why get-well flowers and new-baby bouquets matter here in every month of the year rather than in one.
- Weekdays and weekends are two different cities. The offices along Colorado Boulevard, Lake Avenue and South Arroyo Parkway are weekday addresses. Old Pasadena's twenty-two blocks and the ten blocks of South Lake Avenue fill from Friday through Sunday, and stay full through December. Bungalow Heaven and Madison Heights run the other way round: quiet on a Tuesday morning, and at home on a Saturday.
Buying by the Season in Pasadena
Pasadena orders sit in the mid and premium ranges more often than at the entry price, and the surest way to get more for that money is to buy what California is actually growing that month. A flower in its own season arrives fresher and costs less to bring to market; the same flower out of season has been flown in and stored. The windows below are the growers' own crop calendars.
Late winter into spring is when the designs Pasadena asks for most are at their strongest. Ranunculus is a California crop from February to May and peaks in March and April. Stock runs January to May and peaks February to April. That is the season behind the Ranunculus & Hydrangea Refined Bloom and the Lavender Breeze Freesia & Stock, and it overlaps with pincushion protea from February to April and wax flower from December through May. If you are spending above the entry price in spring, this is where the money goes furthest.
From mid-April to November the field-grown garden roses come in — the outdoor crop rather than the year-round greenhouse rose, and a different flower in scent and shape. Sunflowers run March to October. Dahlias arrive in June and hold to October, at their best in August and September. Kangaroo paw is a short May-and-June crop. From September to November, Safari Sunset leucadendron gives autumn work its deep red. Underneath all of it, the California greens — eucalyptus, myrtle, rosemary, salal, olive and snapdragon — are cut every month of the year. Most of this range sits in our bouquets as it comes into season.
And what has no California season at all. Peonies are not grown commercially anywhere in this state. Every peony sold in Los Angeles is imported, and outside the short northern-hemisphere window in May and June they come from cold storage — which is exactly why peony prices swing the way they do. Freesia, hydrangea, tulips, lisianthus, anemone and carnations are on the market here every month, but that is import supply, not a Californian season, so no honest month range exists for them either.
